New and cool – Yahoo Pipes. Well, this is SOA for really lazy (or just normal) folks ;)

If someone thinks that only Google do (do they?) cool things exposing SOA-like stuff via nice Web 2.0 widgets, this is not quite so. Look at this invention of Yahoo – Yahoo Pipes. As they say, “look ma, no coding, just dragging and dropping!”
This is really interesting stuff – allows to play with programmable web without programming.
Really, the stuff we can create with these Yahoo Pipes on the Web is limited only to our imagination… Well, maybe constrained by available feeds/services. The Yahoo Pipes drew some attention right away, of course…
A meaningful example – eBay price watch.
This Pipes editor reminds me Tibco Integration Manager, an expensive integration product, which we were using at Kiala. The product sucked, but somehow used to do the job. The world has changed – some simple version of such monster is available via WWW for free to play, and Tibco ships AJAX interface…
Here is how a cool meets a scalable
We all want her to be smart, beautiful and maybe rich
OK, gotta pack and catch my flight in a few hours. Kind of “dushas, iklotas, oro uosto parkingas, Lufthansa ” weekly routine ![]()
See you on Saturday.

Damn, my idea of post was stolen
I was thinking about mentioning Yahoo! Pipes in this blog for some time now, but never had enough time and/or will to do it.
It’s a good idea, and the Pipes’ interface is all nice and shiny, but IMHO it’s still not an easy task to create a pipe, especially for someone without IT background. It’s easy to get lost between all the options, however

Yes, we do steal ideas ’round here, so watch out
You still can post about Openkapow, Dapper or DabbleDB
To be frank, the Yahoo Pipes were introduced to me by Stefano Crosta of Cisco Labs France as we were discussing the material of Web Technologies course we teach with Stefano and Pietro Michiardi at Institut Eurecom.
I can agree that creating these pipes is not a no-brainer, especially as they are designed to operate on the primitives most people are slightly less aware of. And the pipes create a bit of a paradigm shift. However, if we look at the pipes the way Peter describes, it makes even more sense. And more paradigm shift
I tried to play around with this plumbing myself for half an hour, here it is, a very silly pipe. Just to say I did it

Everybody seems to be crazy about data mashups
and dapper, openkapow, yahoo pipes are not alone, there are plenty of alternatives. Here is a good comparison read of most popular data mashup tools. Also big blue industry giant is serious about it and provides some tool for creating data mashups.
